Jessica* was a happily married fourth grade teacher with three children when her life turned upside down. Her husband, who struggled with substance abused and anger management, turned violent and began abusing her. She considered leaving him, but when the abuse was transferred to their children, the state of Illinois intervened and removed the children from their home.
Jessica was devastated, but her struggle wasn’t over. She knew that she had to leave her husband, and when she did, she lost everything. Jessica’s broken relationship with her parents left her with nowhere to go, which also resulted in her losing her job.
Jessica was about to give up when she met her children’s case worker and counselor from Caritas Family Solutions. With the support Jessica received she was able to secure a full-time job teaching position and find an apartment. She enrolled in individual counseling, parenting classes and domestic violence counseling in order to find a way to cope and move forward.
“The support I received from Caritas helped me get through the most difficult time in my life,” Jessica said. “With the help of my counselor I found ways to cope with my emotions and was able to move forward when it seemed impossible.”
After completing counseling and filing for divorce, Jessica was able to get her children back within a year. They now live happily together as a family, and she cherishes every minute she spends with her children. The four of them attend church activities and Jessica and her two daughters are even taking self-defense classes together. Jessica is positive about the future, but she will never forget the hardships she endured or the positive, life-saving support she received from Caritas.
